Tags for Idaho’s first official wolf hunt go on sale one week from today, with hunters allowed to take 220 animals over the fall and winter.
The Idaho Fish and Game Commission set take limits for the hunt at its meeting today in Idaho Falls. Tags will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24 at all state license vendors.
So, how much will it cost you to hunt for one of the recently delisted wolves? Resident tags will cost $11.75, while out-of-state hunters will pony up $186.
The planned hunt has been one of the more controversial portions of the state’s wolf management plan, which was approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department, as well as reconfirmed by the federal courts after numerous conservation groups filed lawsuits claiming that the states did not have enough protections in place to keep the species from again becoming endangered.
Just minutes after Fish and Game made the announcement, Defenders of Wildlife issued its own press release promising that it would join other groups to file an emergency motion to have the hunt suspended and wolves returned to federal protection.
According to Idaho Fish and Game, the state is now home to at least 1,000 wolves, with an estimated population increase of 20 percent per year if hunting is not allowed. Originally, 35 wolves were released into Central Idaho in 1995 and 1996.
Hunting limits were set in 12 wolf management zones within the state, and officials stated that when limits in each area are met, the season will close. Take limits will be adjusted each year depending on population and circumstances.
The first wolf season to open will be in the Lolo Zone in Northern Idaho and the Sawtooth Zone in Central Idaho, which will be open from Tuesday, Sept. 1 through March 31, 2010. The Selway and Middle Fork Zones in North Central Idaho will be open from Tuesday, Sept. 15 through Dec. 31, and the remaining eight management zones will be open from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Dec. 31.
The Boise area is in the South Idaho Zone, which reaches from the Oregon border to the Wyoming state line. There will be a total of five wolves allowed to be taken from the hunting zone.
All wolf kills must be reported to Fish and Game within 24 hours.
Fish and Game spokesman Ed Mitchell said he’s already heard from numerous would-be hunters both in and out of state, all vying to be one of the few to take home a wolf.
According to Commission policy, the population will eventually be managed to 2005 levels of roughly 520 wolves, which is more than required by Fish and Wildlife to keep them off the Endangered Species List.

We sportsmen have spent millions of our hard earned dollars to manage and protect wildlife. the wolf is a cold blooded killer, who now is putting an end to our most valued hunting and outdoor traditions.I say screw the anti-hunting liberals, whos agenda was to put all hunting ,by us sportsmen away for good.I say,no more wolves!!!KILL THEM ALL !!! Randy G.Grange Utah
Yes, you are a true sportman!! YOU are a cold blood killer! Use your hands to fight and then call it sport! Like every hunter you have to use a rifle to feel like a man: you won't ever be a man, small penis impotent!
I cant believe that they would allow something like this. You introduce the wolves and then you come along and shoot them?? And " all wolf" kills must be reported? Thats insane people wont report that they have shot the wolf - they will just pretend they havent and go and kill another one.
Who are you to play god, and play with the lifes of wolves? Why on earth would a person want to do this other than being sick and deranged? I dont understand it and i never will - why kill an animal with a gun - does it make people feel manly and important?
Its disgusting and foul that this is allowed - it makes me sick and I hate to think of the filthy, deranged and vile people who are participating in this - get a life people and get over yourselfs you sick
It's sad that humans haven't come up with an intelligent, "humane" way to deal with the problem. Let's use our gifts - our brains - and employ what we preach rather than baser instincts!
Randy - how is a wolf putting an end to your most valued hunting and outdoor traditions???
The wolf is a better hunter than you - deal with it - get over it - lose the gun then fight the wolf and lets see who comes out of the flight?
I agree with HelsHilt. Use your hands and teeth against the wolf and see who the better fighter is. Using a firearm against these animals is WRONG and those who believe it's not are DISGUSTING, inhumane, and far lower than those animals you seek to kill.
I have a B.S. in Wildlife & Fisheries Conservation and I have to say, this is a poor way of "managing" the wolf population. I urge U.S. Fish & Wildlife to find a better way!
Randy really you spent millions - that's tax payer money propping up those National and State Parks you want to shoot your gun in - take it to a pistol range and let the balance of nature sort it out - apparently their is plenty of prey or the wolves wouldn't be surviving.

"Manage and PROTECT wildlife"??? Is THAT what you call your sick, blood-thirsty, twisted killings? Animals are ANIMALS, they do NOT kill in cold-blood, they do NOT harm others for the joy of killing, like YOU do, Randall! You probably get a thrill with every drop of innocent blood shed by your cruel hands; dare I say you drool a bit, too, with a deranged look in your eyes, watching these beautiful creatures struggle for life. What a COWARD you are, Randall, what a low-life COWARD. Words are wasted on you, just like every breath you take. You are NO GOOD, you are WORTHLESS, you are VILE, you do not have a right to be on this earth, killing and harming innocent creatures for your sick pleasures. Sick twisted perverted POS. You are WORTHLESS, Randall. I hope you suffer and die a cruel death like so many you have inflicted upon these innocent creatures. That'd be less than you deserve. You and Michael Vick should hang out sometime, swapping torture stories. Loser.
The kind of mentality that would allow this to happen is an anathema to me. (If you own a dictionary Randy G. Grange, look it up.)
It is a real stretch of the imagination to call this sport. Ignorance, cruelty, macho BS is more accurate.
The idea that wolf packs, real family units will be (literally) torn asunder so that the state can have more cattle is cowardly and stupid.
People like randy are why the wolf nearly went extinct in the us. They only hunt the WEAK animals, not the strong(Which the hunters like to kill). Get educated on wildlife and do not make uneducated decisions!!
A true hunter is someone that hunts out of basic survival need- food! Our ancestors hunted because they had to to survive. And they managed not to kill off entire species! Was not until man used guns to kill, that is when it became a sport, "for fun". No one is saying that hunter's should be abloished, but come on, are you going to eat the wolf? God gave us these creatures so we can survive on this earth. We should hunt them according to our needs. There is no use in killing a wolf, except for a trophy. They are on earth to keep the animal population in check, nature has thier own checks and balances. Try laying your gun down, put away those traps and baits and use a bow-n-arrow and track your prey with skill and ancestoral instinct. Kill only what you can eat. If all hunters did that there would be plenty of "hunting and outdoor traditions" left for everone.
Hunting is barbaric and unnecessary. If wolves can be killed because hunters brand them cold-blooded killers (they have to eat) then what does that mean we can do to the hunters? Just a thought.
Please help humanity evolve to embrace a symbiotic relationship with our environment. Not allowing people to hunt teaches respect for life. If we put people in jail for hurting domestic pets, why do we still allow wild animals to be hurt and killed for fun? People who hunt animals seem more likely to hunt humans. Who are we to decide who or what lives or dies? Please try to find something positive and productive for amusement. This is cruelty, plain and simple. Please don't sanctifiy cruelty in your state.
We hear from the open range cattle ranchers "The elk eat all of the grasses and our cattle starve". We hear from the hunters "The wolves kill all the elk and we have no elk to hunt". If the wolves are killing all the elk, then the open range ranchers should be happy, right?
Nope, because they come back and say "The wolves are killing all of our cattle and ruining our business". How many open cattle die for other reasons, and then the wolf gets blamed because they are also scavengers, and have fed on the carcass? If there were no wolves, coyotes scavenge (and kill calves). As wolf populations go up, coyote populations tend to go down.
Idaho is an enormous state (and stunningly beautiful) and there was certainly a time when buffalo, elk and even wolves thrived in huge numbers. It was not the wolves that decimated the elk and buffalo, it was humans.
Removing wolves from protection and allowing hunts will not guarantee that only the permitted number of wolves are killed. Once the protection is off, there is a nod of encouragement to "go get 'em boys".
I understand hunting elk, they are quite tasty and a quality natural source of human food. I can see that concept for all edible game animals. I see only hate, fear and misunderstanding in the hunting of wolves. They bear no responsibility for the early losses of elk, buffalo and other edible game animals, and their effect on free range cattle ranching is hazy and unclear.
1000 wolves are not very many for a state as vast and wild as Idaho. It would take very little human predator pressure to spiral their numbers down, back into trouble.
How can you shoot these beautiful animals. What have they done you? Is it just a sport for you? Do ou feel that you have power by shooting innocent animals?
These are endangered species. There are hardly any left. You're evil and heartless when you can do so.
I promise you. I will fight against this. I will do everything to stop these barbaric killings!!!!
Hunters are men, for the most part, who are afraid that they are homosexuals and have to don all the hunting paraphenalia and go out and shoot animals to reassure themselves that they are indeed masculine. It is called homosexual panic. They put their "trophies" up on the walls of their homes to constantly reassure themselves that they are not gay. Their guns are metaphors for the powerful penises that they wish they had. You know, of course, that guns are phallic symbols. You can shoot all the animals you want but you will always be scared, always be frightened that you are not a man, not heterosexual, and that your penis is inadequate. That's the truth of the matter.
I'm appalled at the barbarity of this situation... the cruelty to the animals.. and the manner in which it's "advertised".. there should be more sensitivity and more humane and intelligent ways to address these problems... it is 2009 after all!
I SAY NO MORE PEOPLE LIKE RANDY, COMPLAINING ABOUT SPENDING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, WHICH ARE TAX DOLLARS ACTUALLY, KILLING INNOCENT PACK ANIMALS. WOLVES AS COLD BLOODED KILLERS. INTERESTING - HAVEN'T HEARD OF A PREMEDITATED ATTACK ON HUMANS. OH - WAIT IT IS THE HUMANS THAT AERIAL HUNT, SHOOTING THE WOLF FAMILIES FROM THE AIR, MAIMING, TORTURING, PERHAPS NOT EVEN KILLING ALL THAT ARE AIMED FOR FROM THE SKY. WHAT SPORTSMANSHIP - WHAT BRAVERY- WHAT A GREAT WAY TO SPEND YOUR TIME. EVEN GROUND SHOOTING. WHAT A FAIR FIGHT. YOU ARE DISGUSTING RANDY AND A COWARD AND AN OOZING PIMPLE ON THE ASS OF HUMANITY.
Wolves are of extreme importamce to our eco system and without them the world would be in a bigger mess than it is already...Why kill another living creature when there are so many other alternatives...It makes no damn sense to kill just because we can....Grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!
Stop the hunt!! It is time to stop the cruelty!!! We need wolves!!! Tough luck ranchers we can't kill everything you disagree with!!! Time to let it go, let nature take its course!!!
how many of you posters on this sight live where the wolfs are i do so here go's the wolfs have have killed are dogs have run are horses through the fences have killed the moose and her calf that hang out by ranch they have killed all most all moose in are area they half killed of most of the big horn sheep calves down river they have cut the elk population way down i am in the woods at least two times a week. i have only seen three deer all year you can't let your kids ride the horse's by themselves in the woods i could go on and on about the wolfs.
how many of the posters here live amongst the wolfs here go's the wolfs have killed are dog's have run are horse's through the fences and cut them up have killed the moose and her calf that live on my ranch they half killed off almost all the moose by me they half killed almost all the big horn sheep lams they have killed a great deal of the elk.i can;t let the kids go riding in the woods by themselves any more the kids like to go riding to lakes and go fishing they cant do that with out taking a gun with them.the wolfs have change are way of living and not for the better.
This is to all those people who, still even today, see wolves through the eyes of early Europeans. Those who see wolves as a menace, one that needs to be destroyed.
You say wolves have killed all the moose, deer, sheep, etc, all around you. You say they terrorize and take more than they need. What you are saying is what you are being told. Sure you may see a dead moose or sheep. But what you don't see are the thousands other living moose and sheep. Contrary to most Americans beliefs, wolves are not savage, they are not blood thirsty. They are a vital part of a healthy ecosystem. They take what they need. Every valid study on wolf predation on livestock accounts the vast majority of livestock killed by "wolves" was done by hybrid animals. Which could be coyote-wolf, dog-wolf, or coyote-dog. So does that mean we kill all dogs and coyotes along with wolves? Of course not, because people like to have an enemy, and the wolf has been seen that way for so long, so why change now? Because we know better!! Hunters especially should be able to see the truth. Hunters are the cause and many times more wild game kills than wolves could ever even imagine! For those of you who may have seen wolves actually eating dead farm animals, of course you would jump to conclusions. But, once again your facts are wrong. Most research shows they the majority of wolves are actually feeding on livestock they has either died from a disease or frozen to death. I could go on and on about this. I could shoot down all your pathetic excuses for killing wolves with real scientific facts. But unfortunately, as it is with most close minded people, I won't be able to change your minds. I feel bad for us, people that is, because we kill and kill, destroy and waste, but we never change even after we see how bad we've made things. So you can respond to this post with negative words, your own perspectives on wolves, but I won't read any of them. I know what they will say because I know what kind of people want wolves gone, and I don't want any part of them. I just hope that one day you will be able to see past or own human greed, and see the world for what it really is and how important each aspect of of it is.
"Predation has always fascinated humans. Perhaps we are interested because we are the world's preeminent predator, killing more kinds of creatures in more kinds of ways and for more kinds of reasons than any other species."
-Peter Steinhart
WOW, North Fork, you are as hillbilly backwoods inbred redneck as they come. Seriously, you can't even SPELL!!! I and all the rest of the intelligent people are laughing at you hysterically. You are a sad excuse for a human. Really. You think you have a right to kill innocent creatures because THEY are invading YOUR space? Hate to break it to you, genius, but guess what? THEY WERE HERE FIRST!! YOU ARE INVADING THEIR SPACE!!! You and you mom/sister and dad/brother/uncle (remember, you are inbred) moved into THEIR territory. These innocent creatures are ONLY killing to eat and survive; unlike YOU WHO KILL FOR HATE, not survival. You are deserving of the worst death imaginable--the kind of death you inflict upon innocent creatures. You're not even worth the precious air you breathe. Do the rest of civilization a favor and go die.
autolykos i wish you would show me where thousand of moose are in are area i have seen i moose all year.the wolves killed three elk in the draw be hind my house they ate one and left the other two they killed a deer on the hill behind me they ate half of it.they killed three bull moose on a friends ranch they ate most of them. you can not hunt moose in my area now. guess why. it's people like you who don't live amongst the wolfs that always come up with these facts i have 11 wolfs be hind me and 10 wolfs in front of me.Remember Idaho had very few wolfs years ago because there where no elk in Idaho then and if there where no elk in Idaho now we would not have any wolfs introduce in to are state.
.
I am glad to see that so many people care about the future of the wolves. I have lived by and studied them myself. They have a very strong social bond to eachother, and by letting hunters go in and kill any wolf they can ultimately destroy the pack. So we are not just talking about the 220 animals they are allowing. There is a way to live in peace with nature. I knew a cattle rancher with a great outlook. He said it was "survival of the fittest", his cattle became stronger and wiser from the wolves, and eventually they were not killed by wolves anymore. Nature has a way of working things out! Why do we always think we can control her? Everytime we do we end of screwing everything up. A 1000 wolves is not a lot for Utah, it's not enough! Our anwser to everything can not be to kill, we are supposed to be the most intelligent species on earth, lets start acting like it, OPEN YOUR MINDS!
yeah, right. i believe hunting is seriously wrong. jesus christ, can't you even see they're just eating to live? they do not aim to take more than they eat, it's just what they need to survive, like every other animal on earth but human beings. you people; hunters or "sportsmen" as you call yourselves, are the real killer. the Eco-system was not made for human's pleasure; it was made for everything and everyone living on earth. and excuse me Randy, but you do not have the right to type "protect" and "wildlife" in the same sentence.
It's the governments way of gaining more money via such horrific blood sport, how can an animal which had shown it's loyalty to man by helping them so many times in the past ....the indians through their heavy dangerous trails..back to the bible romulus and his twin brother remus thrown into a river in a basket and left to die ..found and raised by a she wolf feeding them her own milk..later to be found by a shepard the boys went on to become famous by building Rome and romulus becoming the 1st king of rome, The date given for the founding of Rome is 753 BC,there was talk of introducing the wolf to the scottish highlands...let them come here where they are welcome to live in freedom and away from such barbarianism of these awful blood sports ...can you people not see that your government are only using the killing of these beautifull creations of god to line their own pockets..stop and think about it.I have a cross wolf and she is the most caring and gentle creature i have ever met before...These animals have earned their right to live free on this planet it is mankind who are destroying it...SHAME I SAY SAVE THE WOLVES :)
I believe these animals belong to no one and so no one has any right to allow so many deaths of innocent creatures. If it is legal to hunt the wolves in this day and age then we should be hunting the real wolves of this world, the animals of governments, banks, federal agents, and societies that are only intrested in one thing. Profit.
If more time and money went in to understanding that we can live with these animals with causing mass murder against one of earths most beautiful and blessed creatures. If one wolf mother desearves 70 guns, then ever person in power desearves castration. I am one 19 year old female who believes we have to much power of the death of the species, I really shouldn't have to list the animals we can no longer bring back!
Hopefully this message along with many others will aid help to preventing this laws from worsening!
Thank you for your time!
This is not hunt...this is MURDER! Murder of one of the most valuable creatures on this earth. "The wolf is a cold blooded killer"? What the hell.....when will you open your eyes and see that the wolf is NOT what you say? How many times have we heard that! Sportsman are just killing for FUN. Nothing ellse. Wolves kill for survive. This is how Mother Earth is. And the only creature on this planet who is a cold blooded killer is HUMAMS!!! Do not belive that you can deside which animals that is allowed to live on the planet. Do not belive that you are the only one who can hunt. This is sick! Humans are the only creature that destroy this planet. This planet, our own race, and the whole eco-system. You say that sportsman spent millions on protecting wildlife? Protecting wildlife so you can go out and shoot them just for fun? And call it SPORT? PROTECT THE WOLVES!! SAVE THIS ANIMALS FROM EXTERMINATION! It's the same madness all over the world.
Hilde Aaseth, Norway.
This is not HUNT...this is MURDER! Murder on one of the most fantastic animals on this planet. Sportsmen have spent millions on protecting the wildlife? For WHAT? Haha...protecting the wildlife. The only reason so many of your kind is doing that is for the fun and for what you call sport. You say wolves are cold blooded killers. And WHO is cold blooded killers if not humans? Humans are the only specie on this planet who destroy it...who destroy our own kind...who destroys the whole eco-system. The wolvs only kill to servive. That is how it always have been, and always WILL be. They don't kill because they HATE. YOU are the only one who are able to do that. Don't you ever belive you can deside which animal that shall live...and which animal who shall die. You don't owe this planet and its wildlife. And dont you ever belive that money give you the right to do what you do. SAVE THE WOLVES. PROTECT THEM. They are a very important part of the eco-system, and they will always be that.
Hilde Aaseth, Norway.
The barbarism of the mentality of the hunter is only equaled by the moronic barbarism of those who support the wolf population to be able to breed to a level to satisfy the hunt quota.... just to please the cave man mentality which says it is natural to hunt your prey... well guess what - they wolf isn't your prey - we are supposedly evolved and civilised - we dont need to hunt our food any longer.. time for a change in thinking...Oh I forgot, thinking is for the higher species - that excludes hunters by definition.
Man is the problem, not the wolf, not any other species man decides to hunt. When are you guys ever going to learn?
Geez some people have no idea, just because the Human Race is the dominant species on the planet they think they have the right to do anything they damn well please, well congratulations to them, look what they have done to this planet, the Wolf is no more savage than a domestic dog so when are the Conservation groups going to file lawsuits to control them, and why for gods sake would Conservation groups condone things like this, evidently the people who make up Conservation groups have no idea what the word Conservation means maybe they should go back to school to find out.
Here to help them out are 4 definitions from Dictionary.com.
1. the act of conserving; prevention of injury, decay, waste, or loss; preservation: conservation of wildlife; conservation of human rights.
2. official supervision of rivers, forests, and other natural resources in order to preserve and protect them through prudent management.
3. a district, river, forest, etc., under such supervision.
4. the careful utilization of a natural resource in order to prevent depletion.
How would these fools and others feel if the boot was on the other foot, and if you don't know what I mean then I am ashamed to be part of the Human Race.
This was an extremely bad choice in my opinion, ecologists should have studied this carefully. For the area more wolves would not be a problem as wolves normally go for diseased game of the herd. Studies show that having wolves in an area is good for the habitat as the game are healthier (because there are less diseased game in the herd) and during years with a high food yield game don’t overpopulate and starve in a year with a lower food yield or start to spread to urban areas resulting in more car accidents as well as numerous other problems.
Wolves are endangered in numerous parts of the world and their survival in another habitat should not be jeopardized.
The cold hard fact about all of this is that the wildlife of this planet live to survive, doing what they have done for countless ages, the only savage species on this planet is the human race, having said that it is only a minority, as usual, that cry, plead and demand for what they want and usually get it because other minority groups wield the power to provide it. Another example of this is when is when the bleeding hearts and goody two shoes stopped Corporal Punishment in Schools and took the right of parents to discipline their children away look what happened then, when they saw the results they went into hiding to scared to admit that they were wrong, I was,as many other people were, disciplined as child in school and at home, it never did us any harm and probably made us stronger.
All I can say to people like Randy G and North Fork is, why don't you petition for licenses to hunt uncontrollable kids and restore the balance in your pathetic idea of society.
we need to stop killing wolves it's like us killing our children i mean think about our kids future what if they had a report on wolves then who's fought would it be if that child got a F because all the wolves are dead the stupid careless people that's who we need to stop them we have to stop people from killing the wolves
Isn't it amazing that people killed off all the wolves, reintroduced them to help the ecology of other species and now we are going to allow hunters to kill them off again. Wolf packs are fragile and if they kill the alpha male and female the pack will starve to death. They have done nothing but bring back some balance to our wild life.
Hunters are for this because wolves have made elk and deer herds stronger, healthier and harder to obtain. Since the wolves have rebounded and are making their mark , these hunters have to get off their ATV's and out of their pickups to actually get a shot off.
The Governor of Idaho is behind this and has stated in public that he would like to be the first to shoot a wolf. Idaho Fish and Game is so corrupt they couldn't make the right decision no matter the reaction. They're just a tool and Otter is an idiot. We could never trust them to decide this for us.
If you disagree with this hunt, contribute to http://www.defenders.org/ and help get it stopped.
I don't even know where to start here. I skimmed through all of your comments and I think all of you seem to be a little off on everything. I think some of you have good intentions, some of you put thought into what you typed, and some of you just typed without thinking. I challenge you all to sit down at your computer or wherever and simply TRY and look at the wolf issues from BOTH sides.
Personally, I believe wolves should be managed. I don't think they should be killed off. Letting nature rule 100% without human interaction, well I think that's a bad idea.
For those of you who believe in God, I'll remind you that in Genesis 1:26 it states: Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
I did TRY to look at it from both sides. From a ranching family, I was against the wolves being introduced in Idaho. While in college, I did an extensive research project and without the bias came out on the side of the wolves.
I hate ID politics,
So what you are saying is that you are 0% for managing wolf numbers and 100% for letting them all live and let nature play its part (for better or worse)?
I am shocked at the hate and vitriol posted on this site. I'm guessing that most folks don't live in wolf country (yet) and have never had one of their pets torn to bits by wolves. I urge folks to become educated instead of reacting in a knee jerk fashion. All of the prime habitat is saturated with wolves and they are moving down out of the mountains into marginal habitat in the wildland urban interface and into rural towns.
When packs start denning in the Boise foothills and snatching pets from your yards, maybe you will understand what rural residents are up against. We are doing our best to peacefully co-exist, but its getting out of hand.
According to USFWS, 12 dogs were killed in 2008. Is that really out of hand? Moose and cougars are both killing more dogs than that. Nobody wants to lose their dog, of course. We live in a state where we are proud of our wild spaces. Common sense and responsible actions can avert most conflicts with wildlife. That is our responsibility.
We, Idahoans, all of us, ranchers, hunters, hikers, bikers, fishermen, dog walkers, urbanites, students, environmentalists, conservationists, and the rest, all of us should be proud of our Idaho for the beautiful place that it is. Now the ecosystem is actually complete. As the wolf population expands it will contract as well. However, this time it will contract, unfortunately not naturally due to impatience of man. The population would find its own balance with the food sources around it. In Alaska and Canada there is plenty of wildlife, a huge source of pride for both places. Wolves have always been there and they haven't eaten everything as some would like you to believe. Wolves do eat. I know it is surprising for some.
Wolves in ID (fewer than 1,000 of them) are actually killing a very small percentage of cattle and sheep (also according to information anyone can get from the USFWS website). They kill a far smaller percentage than the percentages of sheep and cattle killed by either cougars or bears or yes even domestic dogs. Livestock losses are far less than they were predicted to be before reintroduction began. Margins are thin in the often-subsidized ranching industry. So the complaining can sometimes be quite loud. But not all ranchers are taking a complete anti-wolf position. There are several proactive ranchers such as Lava Lake over by Carey, that are implementing non-lethal methods for deterring wolf predation upon sheep. Last year they lost just one sheep to wolves. The programs have been quite successful. There are many other ranchers that deserve credit for their efforts as well.
The elk? The Idaho Fish and Game itself stated that of all hunting zones in the state (90+ of them I think) elk populations in only one zone (Lolo) is causing them concern. I have called IFG a few times in the past weeks and have been told that they are not concerned with elk numbers statewide, just in Lolo. Last year's elk harvest statewide was very close to the 10-year average. Half of those last ten years saw greater harvests, half saw fewer. Go to the Idaho Fish and Game website to read the harvest report statistics if you need proof.
Elk hunting is getting more difficult. That is a fact. But that is because they are more alert and more ready for hunters than before because wolf packs keep them alert and on the move. The ecology has responded amazingly well. This phenomenon is carefully documented it "The Decade of the Wolf" by Smith and Ferguson explaining the tremendous ecological benefits Yellowstone NP has witnessed since reintroduction. A complete ecosystem is a good thing.

I can not believe how people can act so immature. If either side of this argument was presented professionally it would be a good read. You people have no proof of any of these arguments except for the Occasional quote. Hunting may not be accepted in some places or by some people, but is a pastime that I and a lot of people I now enjoy. This is how we spend family time, fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping. We are with our families every chance we get and enjoying the outdoors. I bet if you would lose the hatred and would talk to a hunter you would find that they are a animal rights activist too, but only to a certain point. If the government thinks that the wolves are ready to hunt then we need to look at that together not one sided and not fighting back and forth like children. The only way that we can manage the wolfpack is by doing it together. This goes for gun control too we have to work together. If you haven’t figured it out by now I am for seeing the wolf grow and for managing them by hunting. I would love to have the opportunity to hunt a wolf and share that moment with my family. I would also love to have the opportunity to watch them on a hunt, or to just see them living like they do so well.Unlike the wolf you people are ruthless. I sure hope my sentence structure is okay for all of you and that I spelled all the words right I would hate for someone to cuss me out for that. I can not believe all the criticizing and cussing that has gone on in this forum.
anyone who is against wolf hunting in Idaho is definitly not a true wildlife enthusiest. Wolves equal prolific breeding and prolific eating. These animals need to be managed properly and hunting is the most ideal way to do it. By the way unless you are from Idaho and you live here specificly to enjoy all the things that Idaho has to offer you have no bussiness offering any opinions about he happenings in this great state. That goes for all of the transplants that move here and then try to change things. livingwithwolves is full of crap and has no actual concept of jack SH%$
I would like to know how many of you hunter "true sportsmen" own dogs, how many of you consider your canine companions to be your best friends. Are you aware of the genetic link between wolf and dog? How can you openly kill wolves and then brag about it, and then go home and pet your dogs? You should be ashamed of yourselves! you are destroying your pets distant cousins! How do you justify yourselves? how do you sleep at night?
Take a look at the ecology of Great Britian, and see how we damaged our once beautiful country by exterminating our wolf population back in medieval times, and i ask you to reconsider your motives before you do more damage to your countrys ecology and remove and incredibly misunderstood animal from this planet forever. :(
Do any of you have any idea what you are talking about when you are discussing "hunting to extinction"? Since when is anyone allowed to hunt the wolves in Yellowstone? And isn't that what our State Game departments oversee? At least in Wyoming, the Game and Fish controls how many animals are taken each year. According to the article, there are over 1000 wolves in Idaho, and only 220 are going to be allowed to be killed. How is that extinction? That will barely cover the increased population from 1 year. If you have arguments about something, at least be realistic and quit blowing everything out of proportion.
And yes, I hunt and I have dogs. But I do not allow my dogs to run loose and kill animals at will. They are contained in my yard and are taken care of by me. Wolves and other animals need to be "contained and taken care of" in a way that allows humans and wolves to coexist. It is a fact of living in a country where wild animals and humans live near each other. No, this was not an issue 100 years ago, but the human population had not reached the extremes it has now. If we are to coexist with wild animals, we must all work together, humans and animals to have a place where we CAN coexist. And yes, that means controlling animal populations at times.
I have to say that even I a wolf lover agrees that we have to have animal population or things will truly get out of hand pretty quick....But I beleive with all my heart there are better ways of controlling population without killing and slaughter involved...There tons of different options available if people so choise to do something, anything besides killing...Man claims we're the most intelligent beings on Earth...I say then stop the killing and use your brains and find a DIFFERENT way!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of the above people should hang their heads in shame...you are the cold bloodied killers not the wolves who have earned their right to hunt for their food like everyother living animal has. I totally agree with aukandortolan find a better way of dealing with the population instead of encouraging these killings...nobody gains but the governments as usual, fat wallets aided by you the blood thirsty mammals yes just another animal same as the wolf.Wolves are the largest members of the dog family. Adaptable gray wolves are by far the most common and were once found all over the Northern Hemisphere. But wolves and humans have a long adversarial history. Though they almost never attack humans, wolves are considered one of the animal world's most fearsome natural villains. They do attack domestic animals, and countless wolves have been shot, trapped, and poisoned because of this tendency. In the lower 48 states, gray wolves were hunted to near extinction, though some populations survived and others have since been reintroduced. Few gray wolves survive in Europe, though many live in Alaska, Canada, and Asia.Red wolves live in the southeastern United States, where they are endangered. These animals actually became extinct in the wild in 1980. Scientists established a breeding program with a small number of captive red wolves and have reintroduced the animal to North Carolina. Today, perhaps 100 red wolves survive in the wild....from what I have learned about the wolves is it not fair to say that man is a far more danger and bloodier killer than the wolf.
I also think it is disgusting killing wild animals if they are attacking your livestock then yes do it but killing animals for fun should not be allowed its the same as the bastards that use dogs for shark bait and the arseholes that breed animals for the fur trade you are the ones that should be shot if you are hunting animals for food then so be it but not to kill animals for the fun of it. It should be stopped and now.
The wolf is one of the most majestic of all animals. WE as a human race can stand to learn alot from these animals. There are much like us in ways. The y are pack animals that have a higharchy much like us but we call it segration the whites with the whites the colored with the colorded whether black, brown ,yellow or pink. They all hang together with their own. You do not have this in a Wolf Pack and to all of you who say kill them you and uneducated and under achievers who don't realize that If the have a dog somewhere alone the lines he came from a wolf. But in the US we kill what we fear instead of educating our self on that. Here are a couple of thing to think about. First there has not been a document wolf attack on a human ever that is pure wolf. because wolves fear us man. Now a wild pack of dog or wolf hybrid wolf dog not pure wolf. yes there have been attacks because they don't fear man. If you have a little kid between infant and about 9 year old and you kill all the wolf who you don't have to worry about and you have a growing coyote population you better watch out they will attack . Wolf control deer, coyote, and many other animal population so a few cattle and sheep go with it . The rancher graze their cattle on government land which the lease for pennies on the dollar.
Here is one other thing for you wolf haters my friend as a pure wolf which he raised from a cub and I will tell you this If push came to shove I know that wolf would have my back more so that my best friend. I think if it was a fair fight no would come out hurt or dead. Technical everyone who kills a wolf is as bad as Mike Vick The football player. And if you what to hunt just Kill got hunt lions in Africa atleast they fight back
RANDY G GRANGE - like all hunters you have a problem you need to evolve as a human being. And please stop using the "outdoor traditions" shit talk as your lame excuse. Pure and utter bullshit. Find another form of proving your Manhood (if you have any) than by killing defenceless animals.
On the idea of Traditions:- There was a time when men were thrown into public arenas and were forced to fight wild animals while blood thirsty spectators looked on; there was a time when people were beheaded in public squares. So why do you think we don't do it anymore? We evolved and recognized it was unacceptable. There are traditions to be kept and others to be erradicated. That what makes us intelligent. So evolve and use your intelligence and do something constructive - become HUMAN(E) and find a better outdoor tradition to pursue.
I tried reading all of the reply's but the tears are forcing poor sight.
This whole thing doesn't make any sense and I am horrified and pissed off to witness this outrageous stupidity by humans.
It is us who is moving into their land. It is us who is forcing them to eat the livestock. It is us who is trying to rule over them ... AND ... it is us who will lose! Wolves hunt with their strength, courage, muscle and teeth. Humans hunt with weakness, fear, fat guts and a gun!
In this moment in history, I am disappointed in the human race. I thought the human race was moving forward with life, but we're not, we're taking away and moving backward.
I wish nothing more then the hunters to become the hunted and see how they like it. It isn't fair to the wolf if you hunt it for living.

wow! open minded tree huggers who want to kill hunters because they fail to open their mind and stop hunting......hhhmmmmmmmmm. i love being in a state where wolves thrive, but they will need to be controlled. i once saw a sheep slaughter at the hands of wolves, 200-300 sheep killed, unknown how many were eaten. so, there are a couple holes in the theories above. it helps when you think it through. the quota will not be filled until they allow hunting from helicopters, so, calm it. in the meantime let's all find the middle ground. do any of the tree huggers eat meat? btw; i am a non gun owning hippy wannabe.
If "wolf is a cold blooded killer" what can we say about people that kill them?? It is just an animal folowing it's instincts!... And what about other animals that kill to eat? Are they all cold blooded?? Should we kill them all also?? Raquel Casimiro - Portugal
spoken like a true frontiersman.. There is a reason people like you were put in Utah by the government so many years ago. Why is it your kind kill anythng you don't understand? Do you believe in GOD? All of GOD's creatures have a right to exist here, just the same as you. GOD lives within everything you see, touch, and feel and for you as a human to disrespect GOD by killing just for fun is murder for we are all part of the whole. Think about your actions for you will be paying the price when you stand before your maker to be judged.
I hear all this talk of being 'humane' and how evil it is to shoot a wolf. From the outset the problem is the all-too-human mistake of introducing them in the first place
Managing wolf populations as a game species gives the hunting community a stake in their survival. Ducks Unlimited and other groups are the reason many species continue to survive.
Other than make the ranter feel better, name calling and threats against hunters does exactly what to save wolves?
And if it is cruel , immoral and evil for a hunter to shoot a wolf, what is it when a helpless human fetus is scraped from its mother's womb?
I'm not a hunter or a pro-lifer, but I do care about logic and reason. And damn, people, some of what you are writing here is so scary stupid that I am starting to reconsider my support for the universal franchise.
I can tell by reading most these comments you anti hunters are ignorant of the facts about who the real wildlife lovers and conservationists are.Randy G Grange Utah.

If we are really interested in keeping the wolf population in check, why don't we just use hormonal implants in the females or nueter the males? I know there are enough people who care about animals that we could raise the money and put in the time to do this every year. A year ago I called Fish and Game to suggest this, and the person who took my call snidely remarked "You can just send that money to me" and went on to insinuate that I wanted to save the wolves so I could "view them" as if they were for entertainment purposes. It seems our department of Fish and Game is not considering the welfare of the wolves, but rather the entertainment of Idaho's citizens, and sadly, many think it is fun to kill.
Shooting wolves is particularly evil as they are members of families and have very strong emotional bonds; just one kill shatters the lives of the entire pack. It is unfathomable to me why we would re-introduce wolves just so we can shoot them. The entire ordeal is a horrible tragedy. The Idaho lawmakers who allow this and the people who are participating in this bloodsport should be full of remorse and shame for the pain they are inflicting on these animals.
To shoot animals for food is one thing, but to kill sentient beings for sport is just plain cruelty and should be illegal. How were these people who enjoy torturing animals raised to have no compassion?
we need to keep the wolve population because they are a big part in our enviourment and if they get down to under a hundred then we have to pick up the pase and help out.
