Cole School Demolition Protest

Posted by Nathaniel Hoffman on Fri, Sep 4, 2009 at 11:40 AM

A historic preservation group is planning a demonstration at Cole School next week to protest its impending demolition.

"Our historic schools are a link not only to our past, but to our future," said Dan Everhart, President of Preservation Idaho. “Generations of Boiseans have passed through their doors. They are more than just buildings; they are a source of community pride and many believe they still have much to offer. The time has come to stand up and protect them for future generations."

The Boise School Board voted recently to tear down Cole and Franklin elementary schools to increase the property's resale value. Preservation Idaho is urging Boise Schools to consider green renovation and preservation, rather than demolition.

The group will hold a rally from 6 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the corner of Cole Street and Fairview Avenue.

Shame on the Boise School Board! Their short-sighted plan to cash in on the real estate boom is a fiasco and now they are going to sacrifice historic buildings. Come to the rally and support the preservation of these two Boise landmarks.

Although the cost and restoration for this school is great, could we possibly find a solution? How about a school for handicapped and disabled children, a program for at risk children, and a daycare for handicapped, disabled and at risk children? These children are in public school, and are educated, but there is still, a good share of the time, discrimination for these children from what I have seen and heard. There are many children from all over the world here in Boise. Sometimes language is a barrier and, although these children are very intelligent, they struggle for no reason. Many parents of these children are unable to find adequate childcare at a reasonable price therefore, unable to work and provide adequately for their family. Many are forced to public assistance. Funding is available for tuition as is available for charter schools. There are grants and scholarships available for tuition and childcare. Would it be possible for our community to come together, save a school, and save more children and our future for tomorrows? Could we turn this into something for our community instead of destroying it? Are there any investors out there that would want to join in this venture? I have the license, education and experience just not the funds. I had a highly successful school of this kind in another state, and am now living in this great state of Idaho. Could we turn this into something the community could be proud of and help children and our future? I am willing to give all my time and efforts, anyone else? Is there anyone from the historic society? Any non-profits? Can we save Mr. Cole's wishes before it is too late? I would love to hear from you. justanotherhana@yahoo.com

I just moved here from the Seattle area and I am sickened to see this darling school being demolished. In both Portland and Seattle, charming old schools have been successfully converted into shopping/dining venues. We don't need more strip malls in this area!

When breaking up thick chunks of concrete especially, the bit may get caught in the material. You can push down on the handle (make sure to shut off the tool before doing this) to lever the material up, or use a pry bar. Always observe safety guidelines when operating a jackhammer – they’re powerful destructive tools and should be respected as such
