House Bill 496 was championed on the House floor this morning. The sponsor, Rep. Mike Moyle responded to input from legislators about the bill, which:
"Amends and adds to existing law relating to elections to provide that each elector shall show a photo identification or personal identification affidavit, to provide that all voters shall be required to provide certain personal identification at the polls or at the absent elector polling places; and to provide for an affidavit in lieu of personal identification."
Each opinion on the bill, coupled with a soap box declaration of just how "sacred" voting rights are in this country, seemed supportive of the bill. As clarified by Moyle from a question directed by Rep. Branden Durst, the bill only applies to citizens when they show up to vote.
Moyle said that he hopes future legislation will require identification when registering, and from Durst's question about absentee voting:
"We haven't figured out how to do that yet."
While listening to the Legislature live on two televisions in the press room on the Garden Level of the Capitol, I spotted an update in my news feed on the popular social media site Facebook, from Marv Hagedorn.
This status update came while Hagedorn was on the floor:

If you haven't heard, you can get your daily dose of State government in many flavors.
The bill passed with a 64-6 vote and is now on its way to the Senate.
