Latino Youth Canvas Canyon County

Posted by Rachel Krause on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 1:00 AM

With the fall elections quickly approaching, efforts to get more people to become registered voters are in full swing. And with immigration issues on the forefront of many voter’s minds, many Hispanic groups are determined to increase the number of Latino voters showing up at the polls. Today, Saturday, July 24, a group of local area non-profit organizations will gather 40 young Latinos to engage in canvassing efforts throughout Canyon County.

The voter registration efforts are part of a two-day "Vote Leadership Institute" organized by a newly-formed coalition called the Canyon County Latino Voter Collaborative. The collaborative, whose goal is to mobilize the Latino community, includes members from various non-profit organizations including the Idaho Community Action Network, Community Council of Idaho, Catholic Charities of Idaho, Mujeres Unidas de Idaho, Center for Community and Justice and the Idaho Hispanic Caucus.

"Those are the six different community based organizations that are coming together to share their resources and skills to ensure Latino community members are not only out and voting, but also participating in other ways, like advocacy," said Leo Morales, immigrant rights organizer at the Idaho Community Action Network.

Friday, youth between the ages of 14 and their mid-20s participated in workshops, skill building and training sessions that focus on how to encourage hard-to-reach voting groups in their communities to vote, as well as educate them on advocacy issues.

"It is specifically designed to enhance the skills of about 40 youth activists that will form, in a sense, a strong base to do a lot of the work that needs to be in the valley and across the state," Morales said.

Youth were selected for the program after submitting essays on civic engagement, immigration issues and their thoughts on the new Arizona immigration law.

"Some are concerned about what state of Arizona is doing and the message it is sending to the country," Morales said. "For many young Latinos, it is a slap in the face that profiling will continue to occur."

According to U.S. census data from 2008, Latinos comprise more than 10 percent of Idaho’s population and 21.5 percent of Canyon County's population. State Representative Raul Labrador, who is Idaho’s first Congressional Republican Latino candidate running against Walt Minnick, has garnered some mixed reviews from the Latino population for his stance on immigration and health care issues. Although Hispanics voted for Obama by a more than 2 to 1 margin over McCain in the 2008 election, a July 14 article published in USA Today pointed out that many current Hispanic candidates throughout the nation are running as Republicans.

Morales estimates they will reach 600 to 800 homes during Saturday's voter registration efforts. They hope to get 100 new voters registered by the end of the day.

The canvas starts at 9:30 a.m. at Endeavor Elementary School at 2850 East Victory Road in Nampa.

AZ is just following the Federal laws on immigration. Stop acting like this is a race issue. It is a legal issue. Profiling is a lame excuse to throw in the race card. Your liberal bias article is disappointing. Better make sure these voters are legally here. If not, they need to go back home.

The liberal press is falsely portraying Americans as being racist when the liberals/progressives/socialist/Marxist/Communists are the racist. We are against illegal immigration not immigration! All countries allow so many to immigrate each year in order to be able to sustain them and of course for security purposes. Why do they expect America not to have borders also? Crazy thinking processes.

I think people need to remember there is a difference between an immigrant, and an illegal alien. One of these two people put some effort into being a part of this country, the other just slipped in and started using the people and country around them. I think we need to be more mobilized against Illegals regardless of their country of origin. I don't think we should do so at the cost of legal citizen's rights, but even the AZ law doesn't violate anyone's civil rights. It just means they can check someone's legal status if they are detained for commiting a separate offense.

P.S. By the way profiling works, be it for serial killers, terrorist, sex offenders, illigal immigrants or many others. Screw political correctness. Common sense is what we need. Good lord people do you want to live in a society without laws?? Where the thugs, drug runners and such run society.

You are correct USA man. Good to remind people of the difference between immigrant & illegal aliens. That is what the liberals and liberal press want us to overlook. Just a little twist to confuse people. That's their play with words i.e. political correctness. I think that started with Hillary back when Clinton was in office.

IF SANCTUARY CITY POLICIES ARE IGNORED BY THE DEPT OF JUSTICE, BUT THEY HOUND ARIZONA FOR IMPLEMENTING ITS OWN POLICIES AGAINST OVERWHELMING ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BASED ON FEDERAL LAW?

As the State of Arizona makes its case to give its police enablement to enforce immigration laws, the DOJ asked two questions whether Governor Brewers law is constitutional or not. For the Liberal Democrats can only be seen as pampering to the growing legal population of American-Hispanics and even larger population of the marginal group who have illegally settled in this sovereign land, expecting to be treated with respect after flouting immigration laws? 1. Does the law causes "irreparable harm." 2. Does it circumvent federal law? Judge Bolton's answers have not been immediately forthcoming, as she is taking it under advisement, but as both sides wait for a verdict in this nationwide argument. Whatever the outcome, is sure to be elevated eventually to the Supreme Court. The ramification for the economy of America depends on the final resolution. All eyes of other states are waiting patiently, so they can legislate their own laws and not only deport illegal immigrants, but stop the massive drain on welfare resources.

Most Americans think of just the IRS appropriations for federal health care treatment and education which in itself costs billions. But all states, counties and even cities—large and small towns such as Fremont, Nebraska are committed by unfair laws, that they mandated to use taxpayer money for public assistance to anybody who walks through the welfare doors. In the halls of “SCOTUS” some questions will finally be answered? Must taxpayers forfeit their hard-earned money to pay for illegal alien’s welfare, which includes gigantic public entitlements for birthright citizenship babies, whose pregnant mother knowingly slips across the border, fully aware of the “Anchor Baby” laws? Perhaps after all- was California Proposition 186 constitutional?

The fact that it never reached the Supreme Court has never been answered? Another anomaly is—Sanctuary Cities—which is a straightforward violation of federal law that has spread throughout America. Why have the DOJ gone after Arizona suffering from an economic breakdown, illegal alien trespassers, with overwhelming infringement of criminal activity. Both political parties have more than enough blame to go around, which from its refusal to follow “THE PEOPLE’S wishes, has created from an angry population “The tea Party.” No matter the demonization is growing in numbers and propagated as an insurrection to the Quid-Pro-Quo. It is a force to contend with new faces, contenders are being proposed to purge the incumbents.

Candidate Sharron Angle cannot possibly compete with Sen. Harry Reid’s money magnet from the open border interests and business lobbyists. It’s a shame that our political system has been corrupted by the contributions that copiously pour into Senators or Congressman's campaign treasuries. It's no surprise the majority of Washington is contaminated with those dollars, peso's, pounds sterling, and other financial currency now allowed by court opinion. Harry Reid is no different with his new philosophy to force through yet another amnesty--far more condemning this time, than President Reagan amnesty signed into law in 1986. This time there are over 18 million, with perhaps millions with more pouring silently out of the woodwork. Sen. Harry Reid is far more dangerous, than Sharron Angle will ever be at the Capitol even though she has some immoderate views.

Sen. Reid was once a terminator against illegal immigration obviously has been refashioned by the business community to express their wishes, for favors given and fundamental cultural alliances. Harry Reid’s immigration record as indicated by NumbersUSA. Reid catches a deleterious ( F Minus ) on reducing Chain Migration, on Reducing illegal jobs and their population in America. (He tried to eliminate the federal employer enforcement E-Verify program in the Senate, but he was able only to make it discretionary. ) He made no attempt to reduce illegal immigration at the border or even reduce excessive visa programs. He failed to reduce AMNESTY inducements or illegal alien rewards. He has shown no improvement in preventing the illegal alien invasion, therefore he must not be returned to office. There is a very large populace of illegal aliens who had smothered the construction trade, with their illegal labor in Nevada.

Reid debilitated E-Verify from pin-pointing illegal labor in the construction and entertainment industry when it came up for a vote, as introduced by Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama. So watch any illegal activity in the polling places or with the registration of absentee ballots, as Nevada like so many states have no safety regulations when voting? Knowing that Sen. Harry Reid is pro-amnesty, many illegal aliens may take the risk in voting. He is the epitome of those politicians passing AMNESTY, carefully disguised as a path to citizenship. But whatever it’s called, the taxpayers will be expected to cover all costs. Billions of dollars that should be going into taxpayers’ pockets for mortgages, auto loans and just placing food on the table as its being diverted to endorse the massive blocks of illegal aliens and their families.

WHERE DO YOU THINK THIS MONEY COMES FROM? Of course the open border opinion is that foreign national families pay their share, but it certainly does not parallel with the assessed 113 billion dollars a year that the Federation of American Immigration Reform specified a week back. At the federal level they can receive free hospital treatment, the education for their children that should be afforded to citizens and legal residents. In its conclusion the whole issue is about millions of extra Democratic votes, and extra copious dollars funneled by republicans, going to businesses for exhibiting restraint on illegal labor in US. Sen. Harry Reid has reinvented himself from 1993 and now has no problem in this deep economic stagnation, from tolerating illegal aliens to stay and competing with the American mass jobless. Knowing that millions more people will promptly materialize if President Obama locates enough votes to pass an amnesty bill.

My nephew was returning home from Oregon and was pulled over in Nampa for DWH (Driving While Hispanic.)

It was a frightening experience for him and his companion who had no gang affiliations (the officer thought they may have been "claimin'", whatever that means.)

My nephew comes from a military familly, with highly decorated service members through multiple generations. Apparently, that is not good enough to guarantee his rights as an American Citizens.

What rights were violated? Was he arrested without cause, was he searched without a warrant? I've been pulled over for what turned out to be no reason before myself, and I'm a young, white, drug-free mother of three... I just happened to be in a neighborhood that was notorious for drug activity and the cops just wanted to make sure... what's the problem?
