Operation Global Gem is up and running ... or rather up and flying. The month-long exercise will fill the air over Mountain Home Air Force Base since more than 150 Airmen and a dozen F-22 Raptors have flown in from Tyndall Air Base, Fla.
Global Gem is primarily focused on conducting F-22 Raptor training missions with the F-5 and F-15E. Officials at Mountain Home Air Base say the airspace and terrain in Southwest Idaho allow the F-22 to employ air-to-ground and air-to-air capabilities in mountainous areas; quite different from their home base in Florida.
Gunfighters from Idaho's 389th Fighter Squadron are supporting the mission.
