Who Is the Specialty Grocer Planned for Boise's West Side?

Posted by George Prentice on Wed, Aug 25, 2010 at 3:53 PM

Citydesk just spoke to the landowner negotiating with a specialty grocery store which is expected to come to downtown Boise's west side.

Rudy Kadlub of Costa Pacific Communities owns the block bordered by 15th and 16th streets and Idaho and Bannock streets. Kadlub told Citydesk that he is in the final stages of negotiating a lease with what he calls a "unique specialty chain" which will feature local produce, staples such as meat and dairy, and nutraceuticals.

So who is it? Kadlub said he's not prepared to say just yet. He'll be scheduling neighborhood meetings for mid-September and, of course, hearings with Boise's Planning and Development Department.

When asked if we would recognize the name of the chain, Kadlub said, "probably not." Kadlub also said the chain currently doesn't have any other locations in the Northwest.

"In a best case scenario, we would break ground in early February, and would complete construction by next summer," said Kadlub.

Why, oh why, don't any "alternate" grocers consider the Bench, instead? I'd love it if we could get Trader Joe's to glance our way, or better yet, a secondary Boise Co-Op. It's not like we don't have large, empty retail spaces available up here. And some of us just >don't< go downtown....

I'm going to bet on Fresh & Easy, because they only have stores in CA, NV and AZ, and a small storefront type place is their thing. They also specialize in local foods. It'd be cool if it were TJ, but I would also like to see a specialty grocery up here on the Bench or closer to the west side.

I currently live in AZ, with a Fresh & Easy around the corner. They don't specialize in nutraceuticals, you are hard pressed to find any dietary supplements or over the counter drugs. We love Fresh & Easy, but their store designs are not necessarily concerned with the community. Their stores resemble Walgreens, and they roll them out quickly (like Starbucks, they are all the same). I bet its a Sprouts Farmers Market, also based in AZ, they have been growing in the mountain west (Colorado) over the past few years. Great, well priced produce, somewhere between a Whole Foods and a Co-op.

It's probably either:

1. Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage
2. Sprouts Farmers Market
3. Henry's Farmers Market
4. Sunflower Farmers Market

I heard its Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage!
There is a posting on their Website, and the store is going to open in February 2012.
