education Setting a New Table: Two New Chemical Elements Introduced

When science teachers return to their classrooms in the fall, they'll need to tweak their lesson plans. Two new elements were officially added to the already-difficult-to-memorize periodic table today. An international committee of chemists and physicists added the still-unnamed elements, known as numbers 114 and 116. The new kids at the table have temporary titles of ununquadium and ununhexium, but final names will need to be determined by the committee.
The discovery of the elements is credited to a collaborative team of American and Russian scientists. The committee spent three years verifying the new elements. While 114 and 116 made the cut, several others didn't.
