A procession of firefighters, police and emergency service personnel led a mile-long funeral escort on Fairview Avenue this morning. They escorted the body of 24-year-old Caleb Hamm, who was killed last week while fighting wildfires in Texas. Hamm, a 2010 University of Idaho graduate, was a seasoned firefighter with the Bureau of Land Management "Hotshot" crew. He collapsed while working a fireline near Mineral Wells, Texas.
BLM firefighters joined Boise Fire and fire personnel from throughout Southwest Idaho for today's funeral procession. More than 30 pieces of firefighting and emergency service apparatus were included. Boise Police provided an escort. Services were held at the Doubletree Riverside.
Hamm's family has requested that, in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations be made to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, a nonprofit that uses financial resources to assist families of wildland firefighters who die or are injured in the line of duty.
