Boise Council Will Vote Tuesday on Higher Sewer Rates

Posted By on Sun, Aug 21, 2011 at 10:17 AM

When the Boise City Council meets Tuesday, Aug. 23, they will consider (in the third and final reading) a 2.5 percent increase in consumer and commercial sewer rates. The increase is expected to bump up an average household bill by 57 cents per month. A series of 3-percent rate increases starting in Fiscal Year 2013 is also anticipated.

Boise Public Works officials say the new revenues are necessary for a series of improvements to the city's wastewater treatment operations. In 2012 the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to unveil never-before-seen restrictions on phosphorous and water temperature. The changes are expected to require nearly $4 million in immediate capital improvements and nearly $1.5 million in annual chemical costs for Boise.
