Posted By on Thu, Sep 1, 2011 at 1:48 PM

A former Idaho lawmaker has been asked to take over the largest union in the United States. John Stocks, who served as a Democratic state senator serving Kootenai County from 1988-1990, has been chosen to serve as executive director of the National Education Association. Stocks has been serving as NEA deputy executive director since 2004.

Stocks will oversee a Washington, D.C., staff of 535 and an annual budget of $330 million. The NEA boasts a membership of 3.2 million educators. Stocks replaces retiring NEA Executive Director John Wilson.

In addition to his time at the Idaho statehouse, Stocks served as executive director of Idaho Fair Share, a citizen action organization dedicated to keep utility rates affordable for working families.
