White House: End Saturday Mail Delivery Soon

Posted By on Mon, Sep 19, 2011 at 3:03 PM

One idea inside President Barack Obama's proposed budget cuts is something that had already been widely discussed: eliminating Saturday mail delivery.

An administration report released today said, "USPS faces a long-term, structural operating deficit that has been exacerbated by the precipitous drop in mail volume in the last few years." Simply put, the post office needs to cut back its staffing and services to accommodate less mail. In addition to leaving mailboxes empty on Saturday, the USPS has already targeted hundreds of branches for closure including 23 in Idaho.

But the Postal Service can't make the cuts. It requires an act of Congress. Literally. A House committee is expected to take up the issue this Wednesday.
