What's in a name? Plenty, especially when it comes to naming Boise's newest street. This coming Tuesday, the Boise City Council will be asked for direction in naming the new throroughfare known only as the 30th Street Extension.
The street will connect 30th Street near the Shilo Inn on Fairview Avenue to Rose Street near the Idaho Department of Transportation headquarters on State Street. The street will have four lanes of traffic, two bike lanes, sidewalks on each side and tree landscaping in a center median. The street will pass next to the city's new whitewater park, expected to open in 2012.
Initial community surveys preferred a proposal to name the street "Whitewater Parkway," but an Ada County Street Name Committee recommended against the name, citing possible confusion with the existing "Whitewater Way." But Mayor Dave Bieter is proposing that the street be dubbed "Whitewater Park Boulevard."
The council will take up the issue during its Tuesday afternoon work session.
