BlackBerry Tries to Appease Customers with Free Apps

Posted By on Mon, Oct 17, 2011 at 9:08 AM

What do BlackBerry manufacturers do to calm down frustrations in the wake of last week's global disruption of its smartphone? Offer free apps of course.

Research in Motion said early today a selection of premium apps, some worth more than $100, would become available to download without charge at its App World for four weeks beginning this Wednesday, Oct. 19. It is also offering its numerous corporate clients one month of free technical support as an apology.

Last week's system failure left tens of millions of BlackBerry users on five continents without email, instant messaging and browsing.

"I think it's a good start, but they are always late," said Richard Levick, a corporate crisis management anlayst. "They are always behind the curve."
