Crane: 'Overworked and Underpaid;' JFAC: No Response

Idaho State Treasurer Ron Crane stood before the Legislature's budget-writing committee this morning, but not a word was said about his controversial use of a state credit card.

Earlier this month, the Associated Press' John Miller reported that Crane had charged his state card for nearly $7,000 of fuel for his personal car over the past three years, some for state business and some for his personal use. Legislative auditors asked the Canyon County prosecutor's office to look into the matter (given that Crane lives in Nampa).

But when Crane addressed the Legislature's Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee this morning, extolling the virtues of his department, Crane said: "We are all overworked and underpaid."

That's when JFAC co-chair Maxine Bell turned to her fellow lawmakers.

"Anyone want to question that?" asked Bell to a roomful of chuckles.

But no one said a word or asked a question, and the meeting was adjourned.
