Leaded Lips: Study Finds Lead in 400 Lipsticks

How do you like your lipstick - leaded or unleaded?

The Washington Post reported this morning that the Food and Drug Administration found lead in 400 of the most-popular lipsticks on the market.

The recent report was a follow-up to lab tests from the 1990s and a 2007 report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which at the time, found 60 percent red lipsticks tested contained lead.

The FDA doesn't want anyone to panic.

"We do not consider the lead levels we found in the lipsticks to be a safety concern," read the report.

But the CSC said there is reason for concern.

"Lead builds up in the body over time and lead-containing lipstick applied several times a day, every day, can add up to significant exposure levels," said Dr. Mark Mitchell of the National Medical Association.
