Santorum: 'It's Parents' Responsibility to Educate Their Chidren'

Posted by George Prentice on Sun, Feb 19, 2012 at 9:39 AM

Forget about healthcare reform—at least for now—the latest red-meat topic that Republican presidential contenders are serving up is a roasting of public education and, in particular, the federal government's role in the nation's classrooms.

During a Saturday campaign rally in Boise, Texas Congressman Ron Paul revved up his faithful by denouncing the U.S. Department of Education and later told Boise Weekly that the nation did just fine in the days when more students were schooled at home or in churches.

Also Saturday, former Pennsylvania Congressman Rick Santorum, who spoke in Boise last Tuesday, told a campaign rally in Columbus, Ohio, that the idea of schools run by the federal government, or even state governments, was "anachronistic."

"It goes back to the time of industrialization of America when people came off the farms where they did home-school or have the little neighborhood school, and into these big factories, so we built equal factories called public schools," said Santorum. "And while those factories as we all know in Ohio and Pennsylvania have fundamentally changed, the factory school has not."

Santorum waxed poetic about the early days of America when more children were home-schooled.

"Parents educated their children, because it's their responsibility to educate their children," he said.

That is absolutely hilarious!

This from Santorum, who voted FOR No Child Left Behind and doubling the size of the federal department of education!

Folks, everyone sounds like Ron Paul at election time. Check their records -- then caucus for Ron Paul.

With the achievment of a permanent underclass the next step for the GOP, and their corporate sponsors, is to ensure the end of upward mobility by ending public education. They won't rest until Americans are willing to take the low paying jobs traditionally performed by immigrants. If they succeed in ending public education and removing the social safety net, they will indeed have people willing to take any job for any wage. Of course, folks might actually wake up and see what is going on before they can advance their agenda that far. The banana republicans are on the march.

ugh... where do I start? Those one-room schoolhouses meant many kids - including my grandparents - only achieved an 8th grade education if they were lucky. Even when Laura Ingalls Wilder became a teacher in the 1880's, they had "public" schools where every teacher was paid a good, comparable wage whether he/she taught 20 kids or 3 kids. This was because they thought that each child deserved a quality education. I agree with that line of thought, but it's not very cost-efficient and I think it would be a step backwards to go back to that system today. Plus, back then it was the 3 Rs - reading, writing and arithmetic. How many computer programmers would result from going back to the old system? Insane.
