Add the Words Expected to Resurface in House

Advocates behind the effort to update Idaho's Human Rights Act say they're hopeful that another Add the Words measure will soon surface at the Idaho Legislature.

After months of gaining momentum across the state and crafting a proposed bill, the Add the Words initiative came to a grinding halt on Feb. 10, when the Senate State Affairs Committee refused to hold a hearing on a measure that would have included the words "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to Idaho's human-rights' protections.

According to Add the Words spokesperson Mistie Tolman, Boise Democratic Rep. Cherie Buckner-Webb and Twin Falls Republican Rep. Leon Smith are poised to submit a new version of the proposed legislation, presumably this time in the Idaho House.

Boise Democratic Sen. Nicole LeFavour speculated on the bill's propsects in the House:

"I believe the House tends to deal with issues a bit more directly," said LeFavour. "This particular issue is so fundamental to freedom and to our duty as legislators to ensure people in our state live in peace and security without fear of losing jobs or housing or facing other forms of discrimination."
