The Lewiston Tribune reports that a manager of a health clinic that serves the Nez Perce Tribe has been fired by the tribe after sharing her concerns about the clinic with the media.
Alexis Walker, Nimiipuu Health human resources manager, told the Tribune about high turnover at the clinic, which has burned through 15 managers in the past 14 years. Walker told the Trib that "the instability is affecting patient care." On Tuesday, the same day the Tribune published the interview, Walker said she was fired, making her the 16th manager to leave in 14 years.
According to Walker, her termination notice accused her of bypassing grievance policies and "the proper chain of authority to resolve disputes."
"By going to the press to complain about the board, you impermissibly spoke on behalf of Nimiipuu Health," the termination notice read.
But Walker said she had gone "through the chain multiple times" and had filed policy violations by Nimiipuu Health board members that were never investigated. Walker said she wants the tribe's constitution changed to better protect employee whistle-blowers.
