Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum is scheduled to suspend his campaign today, making former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the presumptive GOP candidate for president.

Santorum was to make the formal announcement in Gettysburg, Pa., according to CBS News. Santorum's campaign aides had insisted earlier today that the former Pennsylvania senator was not quitting the race despite his last-minute cancellation of campaign events.

Speculation had mounted that Santorum would bow out before Pennsylvania's April 24 primary in order to avoid the possible embarrassment of losing his home state. Recent Pennsylvania polls showed the race tightening between Santorum and Romney.

CBS News estimated that Romney has secured 645 of the 1,144 delegates necessary to win the nomination at the August Republican national convention in Tampa, Fla. Santorum was second with 252 delegates, followed by Newt Gingrich with 128 and Ron Paul with 45.
