Primary 2012: Way Past Their Bedtime

Posted By on Wed, May 16, 2012 at 7:01 AM

As early as 7 p.m Tuesday evening, at the GOP primary results headquarters at Boise's Riverside Hotel, two young boys politely walked about the room full of tables handing out bright red "Labrador for Idaho" stickers.

"I'm not the type to bring them to the grocery store to campaign or anything," said China Gum. "This is just a fun event."

Gum is Idaho Republican Rep. Raul Labrador's campaign manager. Gum attended the event with her two sons, Jerry and Max, ages 5 and 6 respectively.

"'They told the neighbors: 'We're going to a party tonight!'" said Gum. "They're so young. They have fun."

However, she said that if the boys decided to endorse a Democrat instead, she'd be open to the idea.

"We'd talk about it. We'd see if they were just doing it to piss me off or something," she said. "But yeah, we'd talk about it."

While Gum's boys ran about the legs of Idaho politicians, including offering stickers to Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter and his wife Lori, she talked about her husband, who was originally a Democrat.

"He came from very liberal parents in Oregon," she said. "He had never been exposed to the other side."
