Road Closures for Ironman

Posted By on Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 11:13 AM

This weekend's Ironman 70.3 Boise will be challenging, taxing and require both patience and perseverance—and that's just dealing with the traffic.

With more than 1,500 racers expected to hit the course at noon on Saturday, June 9, roads in Downtown and East Boise will be the subjects of various closures and restrictions—some of which are already in effect.

Eighth Street through BODO (from Broad Street to Front Street) closed on June 7 and will remain closed to traffic until 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 10. But commuters will need to plan ahead if they plan to use Capitol Boulevard to get through downtown tonight. Capitol Boulevard between Myrtle and Front streets will close at 6 p.m., and stay closed until 2 a.m. on Sunday.

On race day—Saturday—far more roads will be closed. Here's the list:

• Front Street between Capitol Boulevard and Ninth Street—closed from 8 a.m.-noon.
• Myrtle Street between 11th Street and Capitol Boulevard—closed from 1 p.m.-midnight.
• I-84 at the Eisenman Interchange—closed from 12:30-5 p.m.
• South Eisenman Road between I-84 and the Factory Outlet Mall—closed from 12:30-4:45 p.m.
• Pleasant Valley Road between Gowen Road and Ten Mile Creek Road—closed from 12:30-4:45 p.m.
• Ten Mile Creek Road between Pleasant Valley Road and South Cole Road—closed from 1-4:30 p.m.
• Federal Way and South Capitol Boulevard between Protest Road and Myrtle Street—closed from 2-6:20 p.m.
• Broad Street between Capitol Boulevard and Ninth Street—closed from 1 p.m.-midnight.

And even if the road is open, there may be some delays along the following roads:

• Bown Way between Parkcenter Boulevard and Boise Avenue—delays between 1:30-5:45 p.m.
• Boise Avenue between Bown Way and Holcomb Road—delays between 1:30-5:45 p.m.
• Warm Springs Avenue and Parkcenter Boulevard between East Warm Springs Boulevard and Harris Ranch Road—delays from 1:30-5:45 p.m.
• Federal Way between East Bergeson Street and Protest Road—delays from 2-6:10 p.m.
• Boise Avenue between Bown Way and Holcomb Road—delays from 1:30-5:45 p.m.
• Watch for some lane redirections along Highway 21 beginning around 11:30 a.m.

Police officers and event volunteers will be on duty in order to help the flow of traffic and get residents who live along the course in and out of their homes. ACHD will also be monitoring intersections and adjusting the timing of lights to help move things along. Drivers are being asked to use particular caution when traveling along portions of the bike course, when cars and bikes will be next to each other.

The race begins at noon with the swimming portion at Lucky Peak Reservoir, then moves to the bike course along 56 miles through East, Southeast and Downtown Boise before finishing with a 13.1-mile run, largely along the Greenbelt. The finish line is in BODO.
