It's official: The Featherville area was evacuated late on Saturday, Aug. 18, as the Trinity Ridge Fire engulfed the Elmore County region with thick smoke and threatening flames. Approximately 350 residence were affected.

In fact, the smoke was so thick that it hindered firefighting efforts, as planes hoping to bomb the flames with fire retardant chemicals found it difficult to reach the fire's leading edge.

Meanwhile, an Idaho National Guard helicopter was mobilized to assist with any emergency medical evacuations, if needed. A UH-72 Lakota helicopter and seven soldiers will be stationed in the community of Pine.

Pine-Featherville Road is now closed to all but fire and emergency traffic, and evacuation centers have been set up by the Red Cross at the Pine Senior Center and the Pines Resort.

According to the U.S. Forest Service and National Incident Management Team, the Trinity Ridge Fire is projected to move and spread in all directions today.

The Trinity Ridge Fire is still only 5 percent contained.
