The opening bell was rung at 10 a.m. sharp. Not at the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ but at this morning's dedication of the Micron Business and Economics Building at Boise State, new home for nearly 120 faculty and staff and 3,300 students.

The sudden death of Micron CEO Steve Appleton prevented the Boise State graduate from seeing today's ceremony but his former professor (and current dean of the College of Business and Economics) Patrick Shannon invoked Appleton's memory at today's ceremony, as did Appleton's successor, Micron CEO Mark Durcan and Boise State President Bob Kustra.

"Steve helped forge the relationship between Boise State and Micron," said Kustra. "Today's celebration is a bit bittersweet because Steve's Bronco spirit, passion and dedication to his alma mater embeds the very brick and mortar that make the walls of this building."

Kustra called the new structure "Boise State's new front door," saying that the intersection of University Drive and Capitol Boulevard is "a new intersection of theory from the classroom and the nuts and bolts of practicality in the business world."

Durcan said the $28.8 million, 119,000-square-foot, four-story building was the "next step in building a great business community" in Boise.

"This is a testament to what Steve Appleton always said: excellence is everything," Durcan said to the standing-room-only event.

The ceremony was moved inside because of the Treasure Valley's yellow air alert, due in large part to smoke drifting in from regional wildfires.

"We traded the smokey air for the aroma of new construction," joked Kustra.
