A central Idaho midwife says she's being singled out for what she calls a larger effort by some in the Gem State medical field to discredit her caregiving.
This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that 54-year-old Sherry Riener faces two years of probation by the Idaho Board of Occupational Licensing and a $4,000 fine for what she called "paperwork errors." She admitted to failing to obtain proper signatures on required documents.
The Tribune reports that Riener has delivered more than 500 babies in the Cottonwood area in 23 years.
Riener said Idaho midwives "face more scrutiny" since the Idaho Legislature decided to regulate Gem State midwives through licensing.
"And so it was not very long, almost immediately, doctors and hospitals started to file complaints against midwives," Riener told the Tribune.
The Idaho Board of Occupation Licensing said Riener was remiss in obtaining signatures from a patient who did not speak English.
