Each year, more than 43,000 people receive life-saving treatment at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center's Emergency Department and Trauma Center, the only trauma center between Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Oregon Coast.

Standing outside of the care center Tuesday morning, hospital staff announced efforts to expand the facility's emergency care facilities by 5,000 square feet and retrofit the facility with a complete renovation.

Saint Alphonsus President Rodney Reider helped announce the expansion, emphasizing the project's role in ensuring the hospital cares for the region's current and future populations.

"Since the early 1970s when the medical center relocated to this site, the population since then has tripled in size. We need to accommodate that to take better care of our community," said Reider.

After a brief ceremony, the Boise Fire Department helped Reider begin demolition on the facility.

Mark Van Gulik, representing Saint Alphonsus facilities, said the project includes building a more functional layout, more patient rooms and an expansion of the emergency room. The project is estimated to cost $14 million for construction and equipment. Architects CHSQA prepared the renderings for the structure, and work will be completed by Andersen Construction.
