Big Rig Bill To Jump-Start Debate Today in Idaho House Committee

Posted By on Mon, Mar 18, 2013 at 9:12 AM

A big rig bill remains parked in committee at the Idaho Statehouse. The House Transportation Committee will again take up the measure today after nearly three hours of testimony on March 14.

The bill would give Idaho's local highway districts the option of granting routes to trucks weighing up to 120,000 pounds. The current weight limit on most Idaho roads is 80,000 pounds but a special permit can allow 105,500 pounds to roll across roads.

Trucking industry interests—backed by the Idaho Forest Group—say that 129,000-pound loads would help them cut costs by reducing the number of trips.

But those opposing the measure worry that local jurisdictions could be sued if a district opted not to allow heavy trucks on its roadways.

The bill has already cleared the Idaho Senate.
