The headline in this morning's McCall Star-News is ominous: "Valley County Courthouse is Sinking." And with more than a week-and-a-half before the paper's infamous April Fool's issue, they're really not kidding.
The Star-News reports that officials at the Valley County Courthouse, which has sunk about a foot, are working on raising the building back to its original level. Additionally, cracks have appeared on the outside walls of the structure as it gradually drops into the soil, according to the county's buildings and grounds manager.
Among the options being considered by Valley County commissioners is a system that would install several metal brackets under the concrete footing of the building's walls. Ultimately, hydraulic lifts would then be used to raise the building.
County employees have been told that they may be displaced into construction trailers during the project.
The Star-News reports that county officials have yet to see a cost estimate for the work.
