When the Serbian team entered a room at Boise State University’s Taco Bell Arena April 2, cameras started clicking and rolling—almost all of them focused on one man: Novak Djokovic, the No. 1 men’s player in the world. Djokovic leads his Serbian teammates against the United States in the Davis Cup Quarterfinals, which get underway this Friday, April 5.

“But it’s a team effort,” said Djokovic. “Even if I win two matches, we would still need to win a third to win the quarterfinals.”

Djokovic told Boise Weekly that being so far away from home, it was still nice to know that he had good friends currently living in Sun Valley.

“Yes, I hope they’re here for the matches. But they’re Americans so I don’t know who they’ll be rooting for,” he said to a roomful of laughter.

Djokovic said tennis' popularity has swept his homeland.

“Winning Wimbledon or becoming No. 1 in the world is great, but winning the Davis Cup for your country is not comparable to anything else in your career,” he said. “Rankings really don’t matter in Davis Cup. This is very unique.”

Djokovic, his Serbian teammates and the team representing the United States will all huddle at the Boise Depot Wednesday, April 3, for the official Davis Cup draw, which will determine the order of play, which begins the afternoon of Friday, April 5, at Taco Bell Arena.
