Raising the Bar: Respected Boise Jurist Alan Derr Dies at 85

Alan Derr, one of the most respected attorneys in the collective memory of Boise, died Monday at the age of 85.

The son of two Idaho State Senators—both his mother and father served at the Statehouse in the 1930s—practiced law in his Downtown Boise office until his death. Boise Weekly interviewed Derr on numerous occasions and he was a constant source of insight and intellect.

Derr famously stood before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971 on behalf of an Idaho woman, successfully arguing that Idaho's 1860s-era trustee law favoring men over women was unconstitutional.

Derr's wife is Judy Peavey-Derr, former Ada County Commissioner and current board member of the Greater Boise Auditorium District. She was at Derr's side at his passing.
