Law enforcement in the border town of Clarkston, Wash., said, based on available information, they have concluded that mental health issues were linked to an incident where a 62-year-old man was discovered July 16 on a Clarkston street with his genitals severed. Police found the man's penis on a grassy hillside several hundred yards away. The man reportedly had no recollection of the incident.
"These types of cases are highly unusual, but they certainly bring to light the challenges of mental health issues both for law enforcement and communities," Asotin County Sheriff's Office Captain Dan Hally told the Lewiston Tribune.
The man is recovering at Lewiston's St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Officials said his injuries are not life-threatening.
