Press: North Idaho Gathering Pushes Back at Luna Over Common Core

Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna got an earful Thursday at a North Idaho forum focusing on Idaho's Common Core initiative.

This morning's Coeur d'Alene Press reports that the event was organized by Bonner County Tea Party leader Pam Stout and drew a few dozen people to the Coeur d'Alene Public Library.

"Hey Tom, you are in trouble, because you're pushing something we don't want," shouted one man.

"Everything about this is by Bill Gates," shouted another.

But Luna pushed on, giving a presentation about the so-called Idaho Core Standards. You can read more about the controversial initiative in the current edition of Boise Weekly.

"What we do know is that every time we raise standards, performance goes up," Luna told the gathering. "I think it's the right role for states to work together on this, to find efficiencies."

Luna added that he was "a fan" of Idaho Core, before heading off to another North Idaho presentation on the same topic.
