Montana Official Ousted Following Racial Slur

Posted By on Fri, Jan 3, 2014 at 10:27 AM

A Montana official has lost his post in the wake of his derogatory comments about Native Americans.

In November, Ravalli County (Mont.) Planning Board Chairman Jan Wisniewski was lambasted by members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes after saying that some law enforcement officials had "complained about their jails being filled with drunk Indians."

Ravalli County commissioners drafted a letter of apology for the remarks, saying that Wisniewski "did not represent the opinion of the board or the majority of county residents."

Through an attorney, Wisniewski told the commissioners they “had neither the legal or moral authority to apologize for the words of a private citizen of this county.”

And now, this morning's Missoulian reports that Ravalli County commissioners have opted not to reappoint Wisniewski to another two-year term. Wisniewski failed to gain a single vote from the four commissioners.
