Caldwell Man Accused of Targeting Dozens of Teen Girls Via Facebook

A Caldwell man is behind bars, accused of trying to lure dozens of young teenage girls into sex using Facebook and other social media.

Alex Rangel, 20, was indicted by an Ada County grand jury on charges of lewd conduct and enticement of children over the Internet. Rangel is already being held at the Canyon County Jail on a separate felony charge, accused of having sexual contact with a 14-year-old Caldwell girl he met over the Internet. The new indictment from an Ada County grand jury includes the Caldwell case and one involving another 13-year-old girl that prosecutors said Rangel tried to entice through Facebook last November.

Law enforcement said Rangel was in contact with more than two dozen young girls on Facebook.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office is currently trying to find and talk to the female victims to see if there were any more girls that Rangel had contacted.

“Since Facebook has been around for so long — and other websites seem to get more headlines on these types of cases — parents forget that Facebook is a dangerous place for young teens to be interacting without parental guidance and oversight,” Ada County Sheriff’s Det. Ryan Pacheco said. “This is a classic case of an adult scrubbing Facebook looking for young girls to take advantage of.”
