Local Campaign Chair for Mike Simpson Resigns Over Bergdahl 'Inaction'

One of U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson's local campaign chairs has resigned from his campaign. Worse yet, Simpson has lost her vote.

Saying Simpson hasn't done nearly enough to bring Idaho-native Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl home, Debbie O'Neill has resigned as Blaine County chairwoman for Simpson's re-election campaign.

This morning's Twin Falls Times-News reports that O'Neill has been actively involved in the Wood River Valley's ongoing effort to keep Bergdahl—who has been held by the Taliban since 2009—in the hearts and minds of American citizens and lawmakers. Friday, March 29 marked Bergdahl's 28th birthday.

"I will no longer be voting for Simpson," said O'Neill. "Anybody who knows me knows that I am an avid Bowe Bergdahl supporter and advocate to get him home."

O'Neill said she called Simpson's Boise office to see what they would be doing to honor Bergdahl's birthday, but said she wasn't given a clear answer, leading her to back away from the campaign. She said she had not plans to work for the campaign of Bryan Smith, who is challenging Simpson in the May 20 GOP primary.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Simpson said Bergdahl's return "has always been a priority for Mike Simpson," but he would not make it a political issue.
