The temporary stay put on the overturning of the same-sex marriage ban on May 15 left many Idahoans with a bitter taste in their mouths. One Idaho brewery is creating another bitter taste with hops and a jab at Idaho Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, who asked the 9th Circuit District Court of Appeals to put a hold on gay marriages until he could appeal the original ruling in September.

Boise State Public Radio reported on the new beer from Crooked Fence Brewing, featuring a logo with an otter wearing a tie and cowboy hat. The logo was drawn up by the brewery's co-owner and marketing director, Kelly Knopp.

"Anyone that is going to try to take away freedoms or not let someone be equal, Crooked Fence is against," Knopp told BSPR. Meanwhile, Gov. Otter is preparing for the primary election on May 20.

"This is our way of nudging the issue and not being afraid to lose a few customers," Knopp said. "Let folks interpret [this] how they want to."

Knopp hasn't heard any complaints from the Governor's Office yet, but he said he'll deal with that when it arises. The beer—an Indian brown ale "unfortunately brewed in Idaho," according to the label—is brewing now and should be on draft within two weeks. Knopp told BSPR they've already had requests from other establishments for a keg or two.
