Idaho State Police said a bizarre incident, which began with a traffic stop on Interstate 84, ended with the death of a Washington man.
Wednesday afternoon, a 2004 Dodge Caravan was stopped by ISP on the eastbound I-84 near Caldwell. The driver was given a verbal warning.
But a short time later, police said the driver made an abrupt turn from the far right lane to the left lane, drove across the median and into oncoming westbound traffic before crashing into a marshy area of the north side of the interstate.
The driver, 54-year-old Gerardo Garza of Othello, Wash., was pronounced dead on arrival by the time he reached West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell. Police said Garza was wearing his seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
