This past week has been filled with plenty of emotion and a few surprises as thousands of Idaho high-school seniors have picked up their diplomas, but perhaps the biggest surprise came Friday at the graduation ceremony of American Falls High School. That's where class salutatorian ceded the honor to a fellow classmate.
This morning's Idaho State Journal reports that salutatorian Colin Jensen opted to hand over the speaking honor to Miguel Mata, who came to the the school two years ago, with few English-speaking skills, from Juata, Mexico.
As part of his graduation address, Mata spoke from the heart and then translated his speech for Spanish-speaking members of the audience. American Falls High principal Travis Hansen told the Journal that he was surprised and impressed by Jensen's gesture.
Mata will begin pursuing a degree in biology at Idaho State University in the fall.
