Montana Fair Ousts Exotic Animal Exhibitor

Officials at the Western Montana State Fair said an exhibitor of exotic animals didn't violate any ordinances, but after numerous complaints from fair visitors, they asked the exhibitor to pack up and leave.

This morning's Missoulian reports that the company, listed as Animal Alley, run by David Stewart of New York, was the subject of a number of complaints, including animals being inside cages or aquariums that were so small the animals couldn't even turn around. According to a supervisor with Missoula Animal Control, an alligator and snapping turtle both sat in aquariums that spanned the length of their bodies.  Animal Control, the fair office and the state veterinarian all confirmed that they had received numerous complaints about the size of the animals' cages.

In addition to the gator and turtle, the exhibit includes foxes, a tarantula, a chinchilla and a peacock.

Ultimately, officials asked the exhibit to leave but they did not seize any of the animals.
