New Internet Addresses Undergo Worldwide Test Today

Posted By on Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 11:16 AM

Hundreds of global companies, organizations and institutions are participating in a worldwide test of the next generation of Internet addresses today.

This is being called "World IPv6 Day," named for a new generation of unique identifying numbers for computers, iPhones and gadgets connecting to the Internet. The reservoir of numbers in the original system, IPv4, is quickly dwindling.

Google, a part of today's test, is enabling IPv6 on its Google Search engine, Gmail, YouTube and other services. Facebook, Yahoo and Bing are also participating.

Web users, for the most part, should be oblivious to the switch, which began early this morning and will last until midnight, Greenwich Mean Time.
