Risch Speculations Too Early

Posted By on Fri, Aug 31, 2007 at 4:00 AM

No one is naming names in the governor’s office.

Jon Hanian, press secretary for Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter, said the governor has not selected a possible replacement for embattled Senator Larry Craig, despite rampant speculation in the national media.

“We’ve made no decisions and made no promises,” Hanian said when asked if Otter had tapped Lt. Gov. Jim Risch in the event that Craig steps down.

“We’re not dealing in hypotheticals,” Hanian said. “As far as we know, we still have a senator in that seat.”

Calls for Craig to resign have been mounting in the past few days as an increasing number of GOP leaders speak out against his June 11 arrest for lewd conduct in a mens room at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Craig has already stepped down from three Senate committees, as well as his role as the co-chair of presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Idaho campaign.

This morning reports came out of Washington D.C. that Craig could resign as early as today, although Craig said he would stay in his position at a press conference held in Boise on Tuesday.

Risch has already said he there would be a high likelihood of his running for Craig’s senate seat this fall if Craig decided not to run for re-election. Originally Craig planned to make that decision in mid-September.

Watch for further updates throughout the day.
