Bikes Memorial Ride

Treasure Valley cyclists are continuing to show solidarity after the deaths of three riders in the last month due to collisions with cars.

An impromptu group of Boise riders will honor the memories of the late cyclists with a ride beginning at 5:45 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, June 17, at Camel’s Back Park.

The route will include stops at the three sites where the riders were killed: Orchard Street, south of I-84 where Jim Chu was hit, the intersection of Milwaukee and Emerald where Tom Bettger was hit, and Hill and Smith roads, where Kevin Pavlis was hit.

In addition to serving as a memorial, organizers hope the ride will promote the need for increased safety when it comes to bicycles traveling in the area.

"Bicyclists in Boise are shaken to the core by these recent deaths. We shouldn't have to feel that every bike ride we take on a public street is a life-threatening ordeal,” ride organizer Stuart Bryson wrote in a release.

“We hope by increasing awareness we can encourage drivers to be more aware and cautious and convince city, county and state officials of the urgent need take into action to protect all of us who use our bicycles on public roadways,” he said. “Boise prides itself in being a cycling-friendly city, and we want to express our desire to encourage action at all levels to keep it that way."

Anyone who walks the greenbelt or uses the trails in the foothills may have a different view of the spandex clad, helmeted banzai bombers. No courtesy is shown in those areas and while that is no reason for drivers to target bikers, they have a lot to learn about sharing the road before demanding it of others.
