America: Toilet Paper Nation

Posted By on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 8:52 AM

After a month in Indonesia, where I almost died of some thoroughly disgusting gastro-intestinal illness, I became fond of telling people back home: "Never visit a country that doesn't believe in toilet paper or soap."

I didn't mean it, of course (the BEST countries, in my experience, don't use either product), but I'd always have to explain that in many countries, you get a hole and a bucket of water. No flimsy paper seat cover. (Hell, no seat.) No sink. No automatic towel dispenser. No mirror. No toilet paper. No soap.
Usually, even if you're in a country with toilet paper, usually you can't flush it, as I rather unfortunately discovered my first night in Peru.

In Europe, they have bidets. In the United States, we have toilet paper.

And, according to CNN, "toilet paper belongs to America."
