Sleeper Kid Wins Hyde Park Rail Jam

Posted By on Mon, Dec 14, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Thanks to a natural dusting, augmented by ice from the Qwest Arena, Shopko and a blue-light special on the white stuff, a group of boarders set up shop in the alley behind Parrilla Grill on Saturday, letting an elite group of boarders leap over a jeep, accelerated by a bungee-like cord.

Here's how it works: a boarder takes position at the head of the alley, grabs the Banshee Bungee handle and when his buddies release him (or her), launches onto the ramp and, ideally, across the rails mounted on top of the truck, spinning or kicking off the other side into a pile of snow. Everyone else drinks beer and dances on the sidelines.

Jam.

Most of the jammers made it up to the top of the truck, with only a few wrecks. Austin Hicks took home $500 for placing first. Jam organizer Corey McDonald, team manger for Banshee Bungee, said Hicks' tricks were a nice surprise, especially on his Dinosaurs will Die board.

Pro-boarder A.J. Ogden took home $300 for second place. Ogden, who also placed in last year's Banksgiving Rail Jam, was still recovering from a recent urban boarding injury.

In third, Pat Miller took home $200.

Here is a gritty video clip from the finals that I took with my phone:

The Jam was sponsored by Parrilla, Banshee Bungee, MT Theory, Sierra Nevada, Eco Lounge (which just opened a Meridian shop), and Newt and Harold's.
