Make a Mixtape for RX

Posted By on Thu, Apr 8, 2010 at 11:59 AM

In conjunction with the upcoming Record Store Day celebration on Saturday, April 17, The Record Exchange is holding a Record Store Day Mixtape Contest. (OK, technically, they're looking for MixCDs, but that just doesn't have the same ring to it.)

There is definitely an art to creating the perfect mixtape and The Record Exchange will acknowledge someone's artistry with a grand prize of a $50 RX gift card, some of the exclusive Record Store Day releases, a wristband, which will get said winner back into The Record Exchange for the Josh Ritter in-store performance that evening and a copy of Ritter's not-yet-released So Runs the World Away ... on vinyl (sweet). Plus, the winner's mixtape will become part of the day's soundtrack: it will be played over the store's hi-fi system during Record Store Day.

Entry rules are simple: submit a one-CD mix to Record Exchange by 9 p.m. on Monday, April 12. CDs must be accompanied by a track listing, which includes titles and artists, as well as your name, number and e-mail address.

A panel will judge the mixtapes using a handful of criteria including quality, theme, vibe and presentation, to name a few. If you really want to win, you'll include things like liner notes—wherein you can explain the motive behind your selection, order, genre choices, etc.—and stunning (or at least semi-stunning) artwork. In short, your mixtape needs to rock and not just musically.
