Josh Ritter came to Boise on Saturday for a special in-store appearance at Record Exchange to celebrate Record Store Day. The store was nearly empty as a long line of anxious Ritter fans waited outside.
Though it was just Ritter and his guitar, the crowd was as attentive as if they'd been standing before a 300-piece orchestra. Ritter told funny stories, explained that donkeys are very good listeners (he occasionally tries out a tune on a couple that he knows) and, for roughly an hour, regaled the audience with songs from across his discography.
"The Curse," from his upcoming release So Runs The World Away (Tuesday, May 4), is an emotive piece that combines Ritter's brilliant—albeit somewhat recondite—storytelling with the simplest, sweetest melody.
(That's me snuffling at the end).
