TIFF: It's Kind of a Funny Story (And It Is)

It’s Kind of a Funny Story doesn’t do justice to the film which made its world premiere Saturday night at TIFF. It's really funny.

Thousands of first-nights roared with delight as the story walked the high-wire of angst, depression and self-harm: A teenager checks himself into a hospital when he considers suicide, and he ends up in an adult ward. This is a comedy? You bet. It's crazy-hilarious.

Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover, Dinner for Schmucks) stars in a “is he or isn’t he” role (Doctor? Patient?). It’s a delicate theme, but the audience, mostly 20-somethings, found great relevance in a story about coping with the 21st century. I couldn’t help but think of a possible One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Next for a new generation.

Galifianakis and his co-stars, Emma Roberts and Keir Gilchrist (United States of Tara) sat in the middle of the packed house, which turned into a mosh-pit of affection when the lights went up.
