TIFF: Middle-Aged Crazy

Quick; name the last great Woody Allen movie. Maybe that’s not fair. How about the last good Woody Allen movie?

Vicky Cristina Barcelona? Please. Just because Penlope Cruz was good in it, the rest of the movie wasn't any less of a train wreck. How about Scoop, Match Point, Hollywood Ending, Anything Else? What, you never heard of those? Don’t worry. No one else has either.

Yet these movies included the best actors and actresses of our time. Year after year, the Woodman continues to get his movies funded, performers bend over backwards to work with him and the movies still land with a thud.
It’s not as if we don’t see the plot coming (from about a mile down the road). Usually a middle-aged man searches for fulfillment or meaning in the form of a much younger woman. Allen’s latest , You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, with a starry cast that included Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas and Naomi Watts.

Don’t worry. You didn’t miss anything. It was just the latest installment of middle-aged relationship bumper cars.
The audience cheered for Allen. But I’m pretty sure they were cheering Manhattan or Annie Hall, which were made 30 years ago.
