Do It Like the French, Not the Irish

When you’re filling your glass with holiday cheer, you might want to spread that cheer out a bit rather than slamming it down in volume until that warm fuzzy feeling starts making the room spin, your tongue feel fuzzy and your stomach scream “Bah humbug!”

According to the studies, it’s better to take the French approach to drinking than the Irish approach since binge drinking can lead to some pretty serious heart problems. In fact, it’s so serious that scientists have given it a name: Holiday Heart Syndrome. Seriously.

Medical researchers have found that binge drinking can cause otherwise health people to have an irregular heartbeat and a vastly increased chance of heart attack and death.

Those same researchers found that those who consume alcohol over an extended period of time—especially in relaxed, social situations—fare much better in that whole drinking-until-your-heart-explodes category. Even though the total amount of alcohol drank may be more, the risks are reduced.

So, maybe this year, think of your holiday celebrations as a marathon rather than a sprint.
