With Snoop Dogg scheduled to play two shows at the Knitting Factory tonight, you might want to get your hip-hop juices flowing early, especially if you are one of the brave souls attending his late show (which starts at about midnight).
To help you do a little pre-funking, Liquid is giving local emcees the opportunity to battle head-to-head for free bar tabs and—most importantly—bragging rights. Sign-ups for the freestyle competition are open to everyone (age 21 and older, of course) until 8:30 p.m.
Not sure what freestyling is? It's arguably hip-hop's purest form, because it's improvisational, or “off the top of the dome” in hip-hop lingo. The emcees who battle don't know what beats will be played, and to up the “wow factor,” they spit flows off the tops of their heads. That means no paper, no pen, no written verses or lines. It’s just the emcee and his or her ability to build a relationship with the crowd by mocking and dissing opponents in the cleverest of ways with no preparation.
Tonight's first-place winner will receive a $150 bar tab, second place will get a $100 tab and third place gets a $50 tab. There will also be hip-hop performances by local artists The Congregation, The Pleasantville Killerz, Gibbus, 33 Deep, Truth B. Told, Alejandro and DJ Destroyer.
If you are going to see Snoop's late show, Liquid should be your first stop. And if the late show is a bit past your bedtime, you can still go enjoy some local hip-hop at a comfortable 9 p.m. at Liquid.
