Need Something to do Thursday?

There is an old joke that says there are three kinds of people in the world: those who speak two languages, those who speak three or more languages, and Americans. Many Americans take exception to that slam. But most of them express that indignation in English.

Perhaps the strangest thing about Americans' mono-language mania is that the benefits to a second language are vast and easily quantifiable. Higher test scores. Increased employment opportunities. The ability to travel more easily. A 2007 report from the National Education Association even concluded that Americans' near xenophobic lack of interest in foreign languages has harmed our national security, both through the inability to effectively gather intelligence about security threats and through our decreasing ability to compete in a global marketplace.

On top of that, a new report was released in February showing that a second language is one of the most effective ways to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

So today, why not work a bit on the ol' Espanol?

Swing by the Garden City Library at 6:30 p.m. and you'll have the opportunity to dust off your Spanish skills with Practice Aqui, a weekly conversational Spanish workshop.

The event is FREE and lasts about an hour.
